The influence of cyclone (central pressure 997-1004 hPa) moving from the area of Taymyr westward, to the southeast part of the Barents Sea; at the end of period the baric ridge spreading from the northeast, from the extensive polar anticyclone (central pressure 1028-1030 hPa). Over the Gulf of Ob the influence of the north, northwest periphery of the cyclone (central pressure 981-986 hPa) moving from the Northern Urals to the northeast.

 

Locally slight rain, mist.

North, northeast wind 8-13 m/s, with gusts to 16-18 m/s; on the northeast coast at the middle of period deflecting to the east, southeast wind11-16 m/s.

The prevailing temperature +3…+8 deg., minimum to -1 deg., maximum to +10…+12 deg.

The influence of the southwest part of the anticyclone (central pressure 1031-1028 hPa) located to the northeasterly of the Laptev Sea. On August 3 the baric trough from the southwest, west from the filling cyclone (central pressure 997-1000 hPa) moving from the south of the Taymyr Peninsula over the Yenisey Bay to the northwest. On August 4-5 the distribution of the northern periphery of the cyclone (central pressure 997-1001 hPa) moving from the central regions of the Eastern Siberia to the area southerly of the coast of the Laptev Sea; increasing zone of baric gradient.

 

Locally slight rain, mist.

Southeast, east wind 6-11 m/s, with gusts to 14 m/s, on August 4-5 increasing to 8-13 m/s, with gusts to 16-18 m/s.

The prevailing temperature +5…+10 deg., minimum on the east coast and over the New Siberian Islands to +1 deg., maximum over Khatanga Bay to +15 deg.

The influence of the southern part of the anticyclone (central pressure 1031-1028 hPa) located to the northerly of the East Siberian Sea, and the baric trough from the southeast from the cyclone (central pressure about 998 hPa) moving over the water area of the Bering Sea to the northeast. Moderate gradient zone.

 

Mainly without precipitation, locally mist, fog.

East, northeast wind 7-12 m/s, with gusts to 15 m/s, at the end of period on the east coast decreasing to 4-9 m/s.

The prevailing temperature 0…+5 deg., locally maximum to +9 deg.

The influence of the baric ridge from the northwest from the anticyclone (central pressure 1031-1028 hPa) located to the northerly of the East Siberian Sea. At the first half of period the western periphery of the cyclone (central pressure 996-1003 hPa) moving over Alaska to the northeast. At the second half of period the distribution of the northeast periphery of the cyclone (central pressure about 998 hPa) moving over the Bering Sea northeastward to the south of the Gulf of Anadyr. Moderate gradient zone.

 

 

 

Ice conditions overview for the period of July 29-31, 2018

 

Dangerous ice formations along the Northern Sea Route:

- risk of meeting with icebergs on the way to the Vilkitsky Strait between 95°E and 122°E.

 

In the south-western Kara Sea intensive ice melting and ice area decay is continuing. In the northern part of the Sea edge of drifting ice shifted to the north-eastern direction by 25-75 nm.  Area of drifting ice between the Franz-Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya archipelagos significantly decreased. Drifting ice along the western coast of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago continues melting. Close and very close ice preserves in the Vilkitsky Strait.

Location of edge of drifting ice in the northern part of the Laptev Sea was without significant changes. Area of close and very close ice remains along the north-eastern coast of the Taymyr Peninsula. Concentration of area of drifting ice to the east of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago decreased. Drifting ice in the south-eastern part of the Sea is intensively melting, resulted to decrease of its total concentration and area.

Mostly part of the East-Siberian Sea was covered with very close and close ice. Open water zone north to the Novosibirsk Islands increased during the last week. Ice concentration in the south part of the sea along the coast and in straits of Sannikov, Dmitry Laptev, Long and northerly from the Wrangel Island continue to decrease.

Edge of drifting ice in the Chukchi Sea shifted to the west and north by 20-40 nm. Total concentration of drifting ice in the marginal area along the coast and in the central part of the sea continues to decrease because of ice melting.
